How long does each therapy session take?
The normal duration of a therapy sessions is 50-55 minutes, unless specifically otherwise arranged by both parties. Ideally sessions take place on a weekly basis but bi-weekly or months sessions can also be arranged.
Rates and medical aid claims
My fees are in accordance with the National Health Reference Price List and most current medical aid rates. In general, clients pay me directly before or at each session (via cash or electronic transfer) and then claim back from medical aid with a monthly emailed statement, if they so desire. However, various options in terms of payment are available for discussion.
Cancellation of appointments
Should you wish to change or cancel an appointment please do so 24-hours prior to your session. Failure to do so will result in you being liable for payment for the missed session as the space could have been filled by another client / patient who may be waiting to get an appointment. Such consideration will be highly appreciated.
Confidentiality
The ethical code of Psychology, according to the HPCSA, stipulates that all communication and records relating to the provision of psychological services are confidential and may not be disclosed without the clients written consent. This means that as my therapy or assessment client, you have a right to confidentiality and that all your personal information will be kept safe and private. Nothing that you share with me will be passed on to anyone without your written consent. However, the law stipulates certain limits of confidentiality, including:
1) If a client is in imminent danger to self, or presents a danger to others, or reports that his / her life is threatened by someone. The law requires that steps be taken to prevent such harm.
2) If a court orders the disclosure of records.
3) If forensic work is done. (Please note, I do not conduct work for forensic purposes).
4) If there is evidence or just suspicion of abuse in any form, as determined by the law.
The law on medical aids forces practitioners to provide certain information to the medical aid. When a client's invoice is sent to the medical aid, the account includes personal information, such the diagnostic codes that indicate the specific therapy received as well as an ICD-10 diagnostic code. However, if for any reason anyone else, including a business, an employer, a school etc. requests information, I will contact you directly and you will be required to sign a written consent form for the release of any such information.
What exactly is therapy and how long will it take for me to know that I am better?
Therapy is a process. In this process therapist and client will together analyse, explore, discuss and understand a problem(s) and set goals for the therapy process in order to facilitate change, improved functioning and healing. This takes the form of a conversation, and depending on the nature of the problem the psychologist might use psychological assessments in order to clarify some aspects of the problem. The secondary aim is to assist the client in gaining some insight and understanding, which may lead to improved ways of being. It is sometimes expected of the client to do some homework during the time lapse between sessions or the next appointment.
Unfortunately, because each individual is unique and degrees of problems may vary, it is not possible to say upfront how many sessions will be needed. Therapy is tailor-made to best assist each individual. However, because many medical aids only allow a limited number of sessions, the therapist will endeavour to address the most pressing issues within that limitation.
